Elizabeth Bethea Clapp Griffin died at her residence Saturday, September 29, 2012.
Funeral services will be Thursday, October 4, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. in Latta United Methodist Church. A private interment will follow at Magnolia Cemetery.
Beth was born in North Carolina, the daughter of Earl and Thelma Clapp on November 27, 1928. She was a graduate (Salutatorian) of Spencer, NC High School and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Then she taught Modern Dance and Physical Education at Hood College in Frederick, Maryland from 1949 to 1952.
In July 1942 she married 1st Lt. Joseph T. Griffin, Jr. and began a long career as an Army wife that took her to his assignments at the Pentagon and six other posts including two tours at West Point totaling 9 1/2 years. She enjoyed a fine reputation as a fine, generous and considerate wife. She stayed in Latta two years while Joseph was in Vietnam and related assignments. When Col. Griffin retired in September 1980 they moved to Latta.
In retirement she remained active in church activities, bridge clubs and the local chapter of AARP.
She is survived by former husband, Joseph; by older son, Joseph T. Griffin, III and wife Martha of Haley, Idaho, and by younger son, Earl Todd Griffin of Highland Falls, New York. Surviving also is her older sister Louise Marrs of Largo, Florida.
Cooper Funeral Home of Dillon, SC is in charge of arrangements.
