The Latta Clerk/Treasurer Ernest Barrentine has requested a public grievance hearing due to the fact that he was not reappointed to his position.
The hearing will be held on Thursday, January 24th at 7 p.m. in the council room at the Latta Town Hall.
The Latta Town Council voted 4-3 against reappointing Ernest Barrentine. Voting for the reappointment were Mayor Nancy Brigman, Councilman Abbott Shelley, and Councilman Trudy Drawhorn. Voting against the reappointment were Alex Stoops, Lutherine Williams, James Reaves, and Brian Mason.
Barrentine, who has held the position since 2010, has agreed to remain in the position until a replacement is found.
The town ordinance in section 2.32.010 states that “At the time appointed for the regular election of officers of the town, there shall be elected by the council an officer to be known as the clerk and treasurer of the town, who shall hold the office for a one-year term or until his or her successor is duly elected and qualified unless removed from office by the council.”
