Herbert David Smilie, 77 of Hamer,  passed away on November 21, 2012 at McLeod Hospice House in Florence,  due to complications with Parkinson’s disease.  
David was born to Herbert and Mildred Smilie on July 13, 1935 in Columbus, GA.  
He is survived by his wife, Olive Kay Smilie of Hamer, SC; a sister, Mary Jane Ritchie of Crozet, VA; a brother, Robert Smilie of Columbus, GA and his four children; David Sean Smilie and wife Dianne of Warrensburg, NY; Brooke Smilie Nelson and husband Mark of Felton, PA; Kelly Smilie Jacob of Londonderry, NH; and Robin Smilie of Florence, MA; as well as 11 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and grand-pets (including a horse!).  
Mr. Smilie graduated from Auburn University and was a member of Sigma Chi.  He worked many years as a chemical engineer for Union Carbide and Kemet, retiring to Wadmalaw Island, SC where he built his dream log home.  He was an avid bird watcher and loved his dogs.  
The family will gather on the banks of Bohicket Creek, Wadmalaw Island at a later date, to scatter his ashes…  War Eagle!
