Robert Chesnut, 89, died at Heritage at the Pines in Dillon, SC, March 23, 2013. Memorial services will be announced at a later date. Kannaday Funeral Home in Dillon is assisting the family.
Mr. Chesnut was born in Orangeburg, SC, December 10, 1923, the son of the late Artie Benjamin and Rosa Meche’ Chesnut. He was self employed in the auto repair and wrecker service business. He served as a Navy Gunner during World War II. He was the last surviving member of the first Rescue Squad in the United States which was in Dillon, SC. He and his wife enjoyed traveling and were active members of the International Airstream Club. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Dillon.
He is survived by his wife Mary Frances Cottingham Chesnut; sons, Gary Chesnut of Sarasota, Fl, Billy Hodges of Dillon, SC, and Robbie (Mary Scott) Chesnut of Charleston, SC; two sisters; and two grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the Dillon County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 1025, Dillon, SC 29536.
