Five local teams are set to play for district titles tonight, while Latta claimed the Class A District VIII title on Tuesday. Here’s a look at how the lower state brackets are shaping up.
In Class 2A baseball, Dillon dominated District VIII’s opening round with a 27-2 win over Kingstree, while Aynor shut out Timberland 12-0. Dillon earned a 6-2 win over the Blue Jackets to advance to the district championship, while Timberland defeated Kingstree 17-1 to stay alive in the playoffs. On Monday, Aynor defeated Timberland 3-1, and are set to travel to Dillon on Wednesday night at 6:00 p.m.. The Blue Jackets have to defeat the Wildcats twice in order to claim the title.
In District VII, Loris earned a 5-1 win over Lake City and a 10-1 over Andrews to advance to the district title game. Waccamaw fell 1-0 to Andrews in the first round, but defeated Lake City 6-4 and Andrews 2-1 to battle their way back for a shot at the title. The District VII and District VIII winners will face each other on Saturday in the first round of lower state playoffs.
In District V, Wade Hampton was set to host Barnwell in the district finale, and Bishop England was set to host Academic Magnet in District VI.
In Class 2A softball, Dillon took a 16-0 win over Lake Marion in the first round but fell 4-2 to Aynor on Saturday. The Wildcats faced elimination on Monday night, but defeated Timberland 11-1 to stay alive in the tournament. Timberland fell 17-1 to Aynor in the first round but defeated Lake Marion before running aground of the Wildcats. Dillon is set to travel to Aynor tonight at 6:00 p.m. The Lady Wildcats have to win twice to claim the district title.
In District VII, Waccamaw earned a 17-0 win over Lake City and a 7-1 win over Andrews to advance to the championship. Loris fell 6-0 to Andrews in the first round but knocked off Lake City 6-3 before Andrews picked them off 7-1 on Monday. Andrews was set to travel to Waccamaw on Wednesday night.
In District V, Silver Bluff earned a 16-1 win over Woodland and a 9-4 win over Battery Creek to advance to the finals. Edisto fell 4-1 to Battery Creek in the first round, but shut out Woodland 11-0 on Saturday. On Monday, Battery Creek battled Edisto again, claiming a narrow 13-12 win to earn the right to face Silver Bluff on Wednesday.
In District VI, Barnwell downed Academic Magnet 15-0 in the first round and Bamberg-Ehrhardt in the second. Academic Magnet eliminated Bishop England 19-12 on Saturday and defeated Bamberg on Monday to face Barnwell on Wednesday night.
In Class A baseball, all four Region 8A teams advanced to the district finals. Latta claimed the District VIII title with a 15-0 no-hitter win over Whale Branch on Tuesday, but after advancing to the championship, Hannah-Pamplico fell 11-0 and 7-2 to East Clarendon on Tuesday in District VII. East Clarendon will host Latta at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday in the first round of the lower state playoffs.
In District V, Branchville earned a 15-0 win over St. John’s while Johnsonville defeated Timmonsville 9-2 in the first round. Branchville edged Johnsonville 3-2 to advance to the championship, but Johnsonville eliminated Timmonsville on Monday night to earn a shot at the title.
In District VI, Lake View shut out Carver’s Bay 7-0 and Charleston Math and Science 11-0 to advance to the title game. Carver’s Bay defeated Estill 19-0 and Charleston 16-2 to avoid elimination and was scheduled to travel to Lake View tonight at 5:30 p.m.
In Class A softball, East Clarendon claimed the District VII championship on Tuesday night with a 10-2 win over Hannah-Pamplico. The Lady Wolves earned a 7-1 win over the Lady Raiders in the first round and a 14-0 win over Allendale-Fairfax in round two.
In District VIII, Johnsonville earned shut out wins over C.E. Murray and Whale Branch to advance, and was scheduled to host Whale Branch on Wednesday night in the championship game.
In District V, Latta earned a 15-0 win over Scott’s Branch in the first round while Branchville received a bye due to a forfeit. Latta shut down Branchville 21-1 in the second round, but Branchville defeated Scott’s Branch and is set to travel to Latta tonight at 5:30 p.m.
In District VI, Lake View earned a 10-0 win over Carver’s Bay in round one and a 17-1 win over Cross on Saturday. Carver’s Bay battled out of the elimination bracket with a 1-0 win over Bethune-Bowman and a 14-1 win over Cross to allow them a chance at the district title tonight at 5:30 p.m. in Lake View.
District winners will advance to the lower state playoffs beginning on Saturday, May 10. If both Latta and Lake View softball teams win on Wednesday, the two local teams will face off in Latta on Saturday.
