Latta’s Lady Vikings defeated East Clarendon 59-37 on Thursday night but fell just short against Mullins on Friday, 51-48, in girls varsity basketball action.
The Lady Vikings traveled to Turbeville on Thursday and opened the game strong, outscoring the Lady Wolverines 20-8 in the first quarter and 13-3 in the second for a 33-11 lead at the half. Latta stayed well ahead with a 12-6 third quarter. East Clarendon rallied for 20 points in the fourth, but the Lady Vikings added 14 to seal the win at 59-37.
TaKeria Legette led the Vikings with 22 points and 12 assists, and Mallory Townsend added 20 points in the win. Maya Wright added eight in the win, with Green scoring seven and Johnson earning two.
TyQuasha Kennedy led East Clarendon with a game-high 23 points. Rhodes and Shaw added five each for the Wolverines, and Bradley added four.
The Vikings faced a tougher challenge on Friday night, though, as they hosted the Lady Auctioneers. Both teams posted 13 points in the first quarter, but Mullins pulled ahead in the second, outscoring the Vikings 23-19 for a 36-32 lead at the half. Latta fought back in the third, outpacing Mullins 12-6 to take a 44-42 lead into the fourth, but the Auctioneers picked up nine points and held Latta to just four to claim the win at 51-48.
Brittani McDonald led Mullins with a team-high 19 points; Lasane added 8; Z. Williams, 6; Brantley, 5; Hunt, 5; Davis, 4; Platt, 2; and T. Williams, 2.
Latta’s Legette earned a game-high 21 points and Townsend added 14 in the effort. Green scored six; McKenzie, 3; Desser, 3; and Wright, 2.
The Lady Vikings slip to 2-1 at the end of the first week of varsity action.
Latta will be at home this Thursday night to host East Clarendon and will be on the road Friday to face Mullins. Game time is 6:00 p.m., so make plans to attend to support our local team!
