The Latta Viking girls’ basketball team defeated the Lake View Wild Gators 63-20 in action Tuesday, February 2, in Lake View.
Latta held Lake View to only 7 points in the second half while Latta scored 20 in the first quarter, 12 in the second quarter, 17 in the third quarter, and 14 in the fourth quarter.
Takeria Legette led the Latta Vikings scoring 27 points with 6 assists and 7 rebounds. Rianna Green added 13 points; Malory Townsend, 10 points; Iyonna McKenzie, 8 points with 6 steals and 4 assists; Tamera Campbell, 2 points; Arica Gandy, 2 points; and Cierra Sullivan, 1 point.
Lake View was led by Jasmine Ford with 8 points while Janai Ford added 6 points; Williams, 4 points; Hannah Miller, 2 points; and Chelsea Williams, 2 points.

Austin Edens has earned preseason All-America honors from the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
He was only one of 12 sophomores in the country to receive the honor.
He was also named a third-team preseason All-American by Perfect Game.
Edens is a sophomore from Baton Rouge, Lousiana. Edens had 16 homeruns, 48 runs, 54 RBIs, 76 hits, and a .662 batting percentage.
He plays for Samford in the Southern Conference.
Edens is the grandson of Carolyn Edens and the late Melvin Edens of Dillon.

The Diamond Back 05 had their end of the year banquet on Saturday, December 12th. They enjoyed food and fellowship as all the girls received their awards. The Diamond Backs had and unbelievable 2015 season, winning 16 tournaments and finished with an 84-6 record for the year. The Mullins Varsity Girls Auctioneers defeated the Latta Vikings 66-56 Wednesday, February 3, in basketball action.
The first quarter closed with Mullins leading by one point, 18-17. Latta outscored Mullins 16-10 in the second quarter to take the halftime lead 33-28. The Aucs fought back led by Zaakirah Williams and Brittani McDonald who each scored a team-high 19 points. Mullins outscored Latta 21-13 in the third quarter. Latta was outscored in the fourth quarter 17-10.
Shakokya Moore added 14 points, Serenity Hunt added 11, and K. Williams added 3 to the Auctioneers win.
Latta was led by Takeria Legette who scored 25 points, 5 assists, 11 rebounds, and 4 steals in the loss. Rianna Green scored 12 points. Mallory Townsend added 9 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 assists. Arica Gandy had 8 points, and Cierra Sullivan had 2. Iyonna McKenzie had steals and 3 assists.

Dillon County 4-H shooters placed 2nd for three different awards at the 4-H 50/50 skeet and trap event held at Mid-Carolina Gun Club in Orangeburg, SC on Saturday, January 30th.
The 50/50 event consisted of 50 skeet targets and 50 trap targets for each shooter. The Dillon County club had 3 squads competing and each squad had three team members. There were two different divisions for this event. The Sr. division was for shooters in the 9th through 12th grades and the Jr Division was for shooters in the 8th grade and below. Dillon 4-H had one squad competing in the Sr. division and 2 squads competing in the Jr. division. The event was completely filled with 160 shooters participating. The Sr. squad with team members Mason Powers, Myers Hamer, and Walker Brumble tied the home team of Mid -Carolina for second place with a total score of 246 out of a possible 300. Both teams were behind winner, Newberry, who scored 256. To break the tie for 2nd place one team member was chosen to compete against one team member from the other team in a shoot-off. Walker Brumble represented Dillon County and had to go through two tie breaking rotations before coming out with the win to award the Dillon County Squad 2nd place. Individually, Walker Brumble came in 2nd place of all the shooters breaking 91 out of 100 targets. He did have one perfect round of trap breaking all 25 targets in one rotation. Cameron Hawkins of Newberry was HOA with a score of 96. Myers Hamer came in 7th Place with a score of 86 and Squad member Mason Powers shot a 69
The Jr Squad with team members Daniel Camp, Davis Lockamy and Zack Arrington came in 2nd place with a score of 234 just one bird behind Belton who scored 235. Individually Daniel Camp came in 5th place with a score of 84 and Davis Lockamy was 6th with a score of 83. Squad member Zack Arrington broke 67; Daniel Camp was one bird shy of a perfect round in trap breaking 24 out of 25 targets.
The third squad attending from Dillon County 4-H was also a Jr Squad with team members Connor Collins, Gately Bethea, and Justin Herring. Their total score for the squad was 196. Justin Herring led the squad with a score of 74 and also almost had a perfect round of skeet by shooting 24 out of 25 targets. Gately Bethea shot 63 and Connor Collins shot 59.
Other Dillon County shooters attending were Tangie and Rich McFee who shoot with Mid Carolina Gun Club. The Ladies Sr. team that Tangie shot on came in 3rd place in the Ladies Division. Tangie shot a score of 66. The Jr Mid Carolina team that Rich shot on came in 3rd place just 4 birds behind the Dillon County Team. Rich shot a total of 77.

ATLANTA— Senior center Jaquanna Davis (Lake View, S.C.) recorded a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds as the Claflin University women’s basketball team defeated Clark Atlanta, 73-60, in a Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) women’s basketball matchup in Atlanta on Friday.
The win pushes the Lady Panthers to 14-9 overall and 9-4 in the SIAC. The loss drops Clark Atlanta to 6-16 overall and 4-8 in the SIAC.
Carnique Marks was one rebound shy of a double-double, scoring 11 points with nine rebounds. Claflin had a well-balanced scoring attack finishing with four players in double-figures as Shaniece Brown scored 11 and Jhontay Giles contributed 10 points in the victory.
Claflin opened the third period very aggressive, pushing its five-point lead to 11, 44-33, with 5:55 remaining in the period. Clark Atlanta scored the next eight-of-10 points a two-minute span to cut the deficit back to five, 46-41, with 3:49 remaining in the period. Claflin remained poised, closing the period on a 9-0 run to push its lead to 13, 54-41 at the end of three.
Clark Atlanta picked up its offensive intensity to start the fourth period. A three pointer by Tiana Johnson followed by a layup by Banks cut the Lady Panthers deficit to eight, 54-46, with 8:42 remaining in the contest. Clark Atlanta kept pressing managing to cut the deficit to six, 60-54, but an old-fashioned three-point play by Davis increased Claflin’s lead to nine, 63-54, with 4:20 remaining in the game. Clark Atlanta cut the deficit to five once again, 65-60, but Claflin was able to handle the pressure down the stretch behind the play of Davis.
The first half of the contest was a see-saw battle from the tip, with Claflin putting the first two points on the board. The Lady Panthers owned the biggest lead of the half, five, twice in the second period. Before enjoying the 36-31 lead at intermission.
Clark Atlanta was led by Mykala Jones who scored a game-high 25 points. Kiyanna Johnson scored 10 points while Siera Bubb paced Clark Atlanta on the boards with seven.
