The Latta Vikings edged the Dillon Wildcats 1-0 in varsity baseball action on Friday, March11, in Latta to claim the in-county bragging rights.
McLeod Carmichael pitched a complete-game shutout while allowing 3 hits, striking out seven, and walking no one.
The Viking’s Eric McGirt blasted a solo homer over centerfield in the seventh inning for the only run of the game.
In a close defensive baseball match each team picked up on 3 hits as Dillon’s Jon-Mitchell Carter was tabbed with the loss after entering the game in the sixth inning. He pitched 1.1 innings allowing l hit for 1 earned run, struck out 1, and walked 1.
Latta’s Johnathan Ray garnered a single in 3 trips to the plate while Cledus Williams picked up a single in 2 trips to the plate. Eric McGirt had the solo homer in 4 trips to the plate. Dillon’s Austin Moody was 2 for 3 at the plate including a hard hit double by third in the sixth inning and a single in the first inning while Jon-Mitchell Carter picked up a deep single to second in third inning while having 3 at-bats during the game.
The Vikings loaded the bases in the third inning but the offensive surge was stopped when Dillon’s second baseman made a good catch when the Vikings’ Dylan Brewer for Latta hit a fly behind first base into the right field.
In the bottom of the fifth Latta again threatened with the bases loaded.  
Jon-Mitchell Carter came in relief with 2 outs and struck out Dylan Brewer for Latta.
The Latta Vikings will travel to Lake View today (Tuesday, March 15). Game time is 5:30 p.m.
The Dillon Wildcats will host Waccamaw at 6:30 p.m. today (Tuesday, March 15).
