At the March 8, 2016, meeting of the DAR the meeting room at Dillon Wellness Center was full. Fourteen members and family members of the Good Citizenship Contest winners made for a full house.
In the absence of Regent Chris Harris, Vice-Regent Lee Ann Calhoun presided. Following a hearty welcome she recognized the hostesses Rena Alford, Rosemary Bethea and Susan Shine.
With the meeting under way Lee Ann ended the usual ritual with the reading of the 9th Amendment of the Constitution which is the enumeration of certain rights not to be construed and not to deny or disparage others contained by the people.
Nancy Brigman, program chairman, was recognized. She introduced winners of the Good Citizenship competition from each school; such as Sir Darnell Andre’ Mace II, Latta High; Taylor Breanna Tarte, Lake View; Kerria Pernell, Dillon High; Caroline Paige Herring, Dillon Christian School. Contestants read their essays. After announcing that Kerria Pernell was the county winner all were presented certificates of award.
In the business meeting rather than have usual reports read, printed copies were available for members to have and be read later.
In early March several members met with Mrs. Bonnie Glasgow, quite an authority on research and genealogy. Mrs. Glasgow had a wealth of knowledge, very helpful for Rosemary Bethea, Julie Sawyer, Shine Shine, Nancy Brigman, Fay Sloan, and Rena Alford. There was unanimous agreement to send a donation to Tamassee in honor of Mrs. Glasgow. At this point, it was announced that Lorene Arnette had been accepted as new member of Rebecca Pickens Chapter.
At the conclusion of the business meeting Vice Regent Lee Ann thanked Nancy Brigman for the program and the hostesses for providing refreshments.
Please note: The May meeting will be at Ashpole Church with Jane Calhoun. Members will carpool at the Wellness Center.
Present for the March meeting were Rena Alford, Nancy Brigman, Lee Ann Calhoun, Jewell Carmichael, Lynne Cox (all the way from Newbern, NC), Linda Dutton, Polly McIntyre, Janie McNiel, Sally McSwain, Fay Sloan, Julie Sawyer, Susan Shine and Patricia Townsend just for the record.
