Charles Carmichael is serving as the new director of Communities For Students, formerly known as Communities In Schools.
Carmichael has been in the position since April. He is a graduate of Francis Marion University and Latta High School and is the son of John and Nan Carmichael. He is a former recipient of a Communities For Students scholarship.
Communities For Students serves all of Dillon County (Dillon, Latta, and Lake View). One of the main things the organization does is to raise money for six scholarships (two for Latta High School, two Dillon High School, and two for Lake View High School) if a students is attending Francis Marion University. They also offer one adult scholarship for Northeastern Technical College.
In addition to scholarships, they help provide books for libraries and students.
Every year, they have two major fundraisers—a barbecue after the Latta Christmas Parade and a reception for sponsors of the program in the spring.
Carmichael said they want to do what they can to help every student fulfill their passion and future goals and to help them reach their full potential.
Carmichael stressed that Communities For Students is a non-profit organization and no one is paid for their time. They take their own time to help others. He wants to help others just as he was helped with a scholarship.
