The South Christian Sabres won 5-2 over the Lake View Wild Gators in the 1 A State Championship game played in Lake View on Tuesday, May 23.
Two years ago, Lake View defeated the Sabres.
The Sabres scored a run in the top of the first inning on a single by George Massingill and never trailed in the game.
George Massingill began on the mound for the Sabres and retired the Lake View batters in 1-2-3 fashion in the bottom of the first inning.
In the top of the second inning, Kason Herlong was on the mound for the Wild Gators and retired the Sabres who all 3 went down swinging.
In the bottom of the second inning, a fly out to third and a grounder to short had the Wild Gators with 2 outs. Lake View’s #2 lines one to right for a single. A grounder ended the inning.
The Sabres’ Tyler Boleman arrived safely at first by beating the throw after a grounder to second. Cole Tarango garnered a walk. George Massengill arrived on an error to load the bases. Carson Boleman was walked and a run scored. Kolby Sentelle hit one to right for a single and 2 rbi. The Sabres led 4-0 after the top of the third inning.
The Wild Gators went down in 1-2-3 fashion in the bottom of the third inning.
In the top of the fourth inning, Lake View brought in Noah Cribb as the pitcher who retired the Sabres in 3 straight outs.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Lake View’s Zach Hunt walked and Tucker Bass was hit by a pitch to place runners on first and second with no outs. Hunt moved to third on a throw to second. Lake View managed a run in the bottom of the fourth but left runners on the corners.
The Sabres were retired once again in 1-2-3 fashion in the top of the fifth inning.
With 2 outs in the bottom of the fifth inning, Kason Herlong garnered a walk followed by a Zach Hunt grounder by short for a single to place runners on first and second. The Wild Gators were not able to score.
In the top of the sixth inning, the Sabres’ Cole Mathews hit a fly to center for out 1. Sentelle moved to second, then third on a passed ball, and eventually to home on a passed ball to give the Sabres a 5-1 lead. Zach Hunt took the mound for Lake View. Nelson Vaughan was caught attempting to steal second. A final strike out ended the inning for the Sabres.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Chris McGill hit a long one to deep short and beat the throw to first. The inning ended with no score for Lake View.
Southside Christian loaded the bases in the top of the seventh inning but were unable to score.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Sabres placed Cole Tarango on the mound. After Lake View’s #7 garnered a walk, Lake View’s #13 hit a grounder to second and was out at first but the base runner moved safely to second. Kason Herlong hit a grounder to short who overthrows to first and allowed a run to score. Zach Hunt hit one to left for a single to place runners on the corners. The Wild Gators Tucker Bass walked to load the bases with one out. The Sabres called Matthew Mills to the mound who struck out the next batter for out 2 followed by a grounder to third for out 3 to end the game.
George Massingill picked up the win. He pitched 6 innings and allowed 3 hits, a run, and struck out 6. Cole Tarango threw 1 inning in relief.
Kason Herlong took the loss for Lake View. He pitched 3 innings and allowed 4 runs on 5 hits, and struck out 5.
Southside Christian had 6 hits in the game, and Lake View had 4 hits. Zach Hunt led the Wild Gators with 2 hits in 3 at-bats. Tyler Boleman had 2 hits in 4 at-bats for the Sabres.
Southside Christian committed 2 errors in the game, and Lake View committed an error.
