Raymond Morgan, 92, of Durham, North Carolina, passed away May 3, 2016. He was born on May 21, 1923 in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, the son of Irene Goodreau and Joseph Morgan.
Raymond spent 35 years of his life in the military. He served in Merchant Marines, Navy, South Carolina National Guard and the United States Army Reserves. While serving in the military, he earned several accommodations to include the Presidential Unit Citation and the World War II Victory Medal. Raymond also worked for a period time at the Naval Shipyard in Charleston, South Carolina. Following his naval service, Raymond was employed by Citizens and Southern National Bank in Charleston, South Carolina. In 1954, Raymond was transferred to Columbia SC in 1955 where he later worked at Southern Farm Bureau. In 1967, Raymond accepted a position with Mohasco Industries in Dillon, South Carolina where he retired in 1983.
Raymond was a familiar face around Croasdaile Retirement Center where he enjoyed helping people in any way he could, from putting tennis balls on their walkers to helping in the computer room. Raymond maintained his well-known sense of humor and the twinkle in his eyes until his last days.
Raymond is survived by his children, Gail Stafford, Joseph Morgan, Dale Morgan (Michael Hughes) and Daphne Nash (Michael); grandchildren, Michael Stafford (Shanda) and Basil Sheppard; great grandchildren, Troy Stafford, Savannah Stafford and Nathan Stafford; other family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, who was the love of his life, Mildred Wiggins Morgan; a son, James Ray Morgan; and a great grandson, Damian Isaac Sheppard.
Funeral services were held at Thompson Funeral Home at Greenlawn Memorial Park located in Columbia, South Carolina on May 7, 2016. Interment with full military honors followed in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
