The Latta Vikings defeated the East Clarendon Wolverines 48-14 in varsity football action in Latta on Friday, September 9, that was plagued with penalties.
The Wolverines won the toss and elected to kick off to the Vikings to begin the game.
The score was knotted at 0-0 after the first quarter as neither team seemed able to move the ball consistently.
The Latta Vikings put the first points of the game on the scoreboard in the second quarter on a touchdown pass from quarterback Dylan Brewer to Ontario McClellan.The point after attempt by Aiden Autry was blocked. Latta led 6-0.
The Wolverines could not mount any offense on the next series of plays, and Latta took over on East Clarendon’s 41-yard line.
Damien Braddy grabbed a pass and carried it into the end zone and fumbled. However, Latta’s Kendell Moultrie recovered it for the 6 points. Davonta Porter connected for the 2-point conversion for the Vikings. The score was now 14-0.
Neither team was consistent on offense at this point until Latta recovered a fumble.
Latta’s Ontario McClellan carried one in for 6 to give Latta a 20-0 lead. The point after kick was good, and now Latta’s lead was 21-0 with 7:41 remaining in the first half.
Latta took over on East Clarendon’s 24-yard line when the Wolverines were unable to move the ball.
Deonte Stanley took a pass into the end zone but due to ineligible player down field the play was called back. However, a couple of plays later Deonte Stanley was on the receiving end of a pass from Dylan Carter.
Latta was up 27-0 before Aiden Autry added the point after kick to make the score 28-0 for Latta with 3:50 remaining in the half.
The Wolverines’ Tyler Baker scored 6 points with 1:22 remaining in the half. The 2-point conversion attempt failed.
Latta quickly went to work and scored with 8 seconds remaining in the half with a pass to Aiden Autry. The point after was good.
At halftime Latta led 35-6.
At halftime the Latta band performed.
Also, Latta’s Kiyana Fleming was presented a state championship ring for her 36′ 2″ shot putt.
After Latta kicked off to East Clarendon to begin the second half of play, East Clarendon’s quarterback tossed one to #8 who carried one in for the touchdown with 10:16 remaining in the third quarter. The score was now Latta 35 and East Clarendon 12.
The first attempted 2-point conversion was good but called back due to a penalty. However, on the next attempt the Wolverines’ quarterback was caught from behind but still managed to get the pass away for the 2-point conversion to close the gap to 35-14.
On the next series of plays Latta made a good drive that ended with a score when Deonte Stanley kept one and carried it in for 6 points. Aiden Autry’s point after was good, and Latta led 42-14 with 7:16 remaining in the third quarter.
The game ended with the final score of 42-14 with Latta claiming the victory.
The Vikings’ Dylan Brewer threw for 208 yards and 2 touchdowns while completing 8 of 18 passes. Dylan Carter also tossed a touchdown pass for the Vikings.
Latta’s Ontario McClellan caught a pass for 65 yards and a touchdown and carried the ball 10 times while picking up 103 yards and scoring 1 touchdown while Kendall Moultrie caught 3 passes for 41 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Deonta Stanley picked up 22 yards on 2 passes with 1 touchdown for the Vikings.
Latta’s defense was led by Davonta Porter with 13 tackles while Justin Hall had 6 tackles, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery, and scored 1 touchdown.
Trey Manning had 6 tackles and 1 sack while Mikey Dotson added 8 tackles for the Vikings.
Chandler Nolan had 7 tackles and 1 fumble recovery, and Jay Bailey added 6 tackles for Latta. Jalen Gomillion contributed 4 tackles and 1 sack in the Vikings’ win. Kingstree will be in Latta on Friday to take on the Vikings.
