The City of Dillon Police Department wants to make the citizens of Dillon aware of a telephone scam that has been reported in the area. There have been reports of citizens receiving phone calls from individuals claiming to be representatives from Publishers Clearing House Sweepstakes. The individuals are advising the citizens that they have been selected by telephone number as sweepstakes winners and that their winnings will be sent to them as soon as they pay the required processing fee. The individual is requesting that the citizen sends $250 through Western Union®, Green Dot Moneypak, or other method of wire transfer to cover the processing fees.
The individual claims that the sweepstakes money will be released as soon as the citizen provides the company with a confirmation number showing that the $250 has been sent.
The individual sometimes requests that the citizen provide their social security and bank account numbers so that the transaction can be verified.
A representative from Publishers Clearing House was contacted and advised that the company will never notify winners by telephone or email, but instead makes home visits to their winners. The City of Dillon Police Department is urging the citizens of Dillon to not provide any information or send any money to anyone claiming to be from Publishers Clearing House or any other sweepstakes over the telephone or by email if they receive a similar call.
