Ms. Mattie Lee Stephens, age 99, went to her eternal rest on Wednesday, February 13, 2019.
Born March 29, 1919 in Dillon, SC, she was a daughter of the late Charlie K. and Ima Butler Stephens.
A lifelong resident of Dillon County, Mattie Lee retired from the South Carolina Health Department after many years of distinguished and unselfish service. She was a devout Christian and a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Dillon. Mattie Lee was an avid reader until her vision failed her. She then enjoyed listening to audio books as her quest for knowledge never ceased.
She is survived by a brother, Kromer Stephens, of Dillon, and a sister, Margaret Richardson of Greensboro, NC. Left also to cherish her wonderful memory are 10 nephews and 2 nieces as well as numerous great nephews and great nieces.
Mattie Lee is also survived by a wonderful friend and caregiver, Agnes McRae.
A graveside service was held 3:00 p.m. on Friday, February 15, 2019 at Evergreen Perpetual Care Cemetery in Dillon directed by Cooper Funeral Home. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the home of Mrs. Mary Mac Stephens, 527 Johnson Drive in Dillon.
In addition to her parents, Mattie Lee was preceded in death by her brothers, Craig and Merritt Stephens as well as a sister Lois Lytch.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, that memorials be made to the Dillon Camp of Gideons or the First Presbyterian Church in Dillon.
