Lake View’s Lady Gators had a six-run streak in the fourth inning to secure them an 8-4 win over the Cheraw Braves on Monday, April 11, in Cheraw, North Carolina.
Lake View scored one run each in the first and third to give them a 2-0 lead heading into the fourth. Six runs in the fourth, including a home run from Sierra Sports that brought in two other Lady Gators, secured the win for Lake View. Lake View held the Braves off until the fifth inning, when Cheraw scored their first run. They added three more in the sixth, but couldn’t get things going in the seventh as Lake View claimed the 8-4 win.
Avonlea Cooke was the winning pitcher for Lake View, going five innings and allowing only three hits, with no runs, and no walks. She struck out five. Amber Hancock was the losing pitcher for Cheraw, going all seven innings with 12 hits, eight runs, five earned runs, and a walk, striking out four.
Lake View’s leading hitters included Chessie Miller, 3-for-5 with three runs and an RBI; Chelsea Spivey, 2-for-4 with one run and an RBi; and Sierra Sports, 1-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs, and one run scored.
Lake View’s overall record improves to 15-2. Their Region 8-A record remains undefeated at 8-0 to give them the top spot in the region. For the first time all season, Lake View fell to number two in the statewide coaches poll, with Abbeville taking the number one spot. Abbeville is in Region 1-A and has a 16-1 overall record and a 12-0 region record that includes four no-hitters and two perfect games, all from pitcher Gennifer Durham.
Some scheduling changes meant that Lake View had to face Marion and South Florence in a non-region double header at home on Wednesday. Thursday night they were scheduled to travel to Carvers Bay at 5:30 p.m., and on Tuesday, April 19, they return home to host region rivals the Latta Vikings in their second clash of the season.
