The Dillon Christian School Warriors defeated the Thomas Sumter Academy Generals 13-7 Friday night in Dillon in a non-region defensive battle.
The Generals are a division 2A school that reportedly gets several players courteous of the Shaw Air Force Base.
The Warriors were led offensively by TeShaun Lane who scored both of the Warrior touchdowns. The Warriors were also aided by the outstanding punting of Jim Carr who gave the Warrior defense room to work. Carr was injured early in the pre-season and has turned over the quarterbacking duties to Freshman Bryan Davis but thankfully Carr’s kicking leg is in top working order.
Warrior Head Coach Christian Wolfe has the offense in working order, maintaining an effective but not over complicated play book. Phillip Price runs the defense which is expected to keep the Warriors in some tight games this year. Steve Johnson and Joey Boykin run the line with John Bullock, Matt Feeko, and Titus Bethea assisting on offense and defense.
TeShaun Lane got the Warriors on the board with 4:31 left in the first quarter by returning a punt 78 yards. Jim Carr kicked the extra point to put the Warriors up 7-0. With 55 seconds left in the first quarter, Lane got his second touchdown on a 31-yard run. The kick was off, leaving the Warriors up 13-0 with the quarter ending with this score.
Neither side could advance the ball in the second quarter and the Warriors took the 13-0 lead into the halftime break. The defensive battle resumed in the second half with no score in the third quarter.
Midway in the fourth quarter, the Generals faked a punt and the Warriors made a costly mistake by getting a ruffing the passer penalty that would lead to the Generals getting the ball back deep in Warrior territory. Four plays later, Generals quarterback Drew Stengel crossed the goal line from one yard out with 6:28 left in the game. Stengel’s extra point was on the money and the Generals closed the gap and trailed 13-7 to the Warriors. The remaining minutes resumed as a defensive battle with the Warriors holding onto the 13-7 win that puts them at 2-0 for the season.
On offense for the Warriors, TeShaun Lane rushed for 117 yards on 16 carries with a touchdown and returned a kick 78 yards for a touchdown. Bryan Davis completed four passes for 52 yards; Anthony “Red” Williams caught two passes for 33 yards; and Ellison Rourke caught two passes for 19 yards. Thomas Evans picked up 10 yards rushing on three carries, and Jimm Carr added an extra point.
On Defense, Thomas Evans lead with 12 tackles and 11 assists followed by Ellison Rourke with 12 tackles, three assists, and a fumble recovery. Luke Price had 7 tackles, six assists, and two fumble recoveries; David Williams had seven tackles, five assists, and a QB sack; Tyquan Crosland had six tackles, four assists and a QB sack; Mathew Price had five tackles, two assists, and a batted down pass; Connor Hamilton had five tackles, two assists; Jake Boykin had four tackles, six assists, and a fumble recovery; Michael Minges had two tackles with an assist; Red Williams had two tackles and an interception; John Bullock added a tackle with two assists; Garret Collins added a tackle and an assist; and Samuel Brown and TeShaun Lane added a tackle each.
The Warriors travel to Florence on Friday night to play Trinity Academy with game time set for 7:30 p.m. The Warriors hope to make it three wins in a row.
