Latta High School announced last week that assistant coach Stephanie Johnson had been named softball coach for Latta’s Lady Vikings.
Johnson will replace Eva Tyrell, who is departing for Georgia. Tyrell was originally set to replace Kimberly Griffith, who stepped down at the end of the 2012 season to spend more time with her family. Tyrell had spent the last two seasons as an assistant coach to Griffith, but had not yet coached a game as head coach.
Johnson played softball at Latta until her graduation in 2003. She and Tyrell helped lead the Lady Vikings to the lower state title in her senior year. Both coaches played under former Latta softball coach Michael Rogers, who left in 2012 to take an assistant principal position at Dillon High School.
Johnson has been teaching mathematics and science for the last three years at Latta Elementary School. She received a B.A. in Elementary Education from Clemson University and a Masters of Education in Learning Disabilities from Francis Marion University. She was named Teacher of the Year at Latta Elementary for the 2011-2012 year.
