Dillon County 4-H Shooting sports team members have won several scholarships at regional shooting events.
At the South Carolina Youth Shooting Foundation (SCYSF) State Championship held at Hermitage Farms in Camden SC on April 30th, team members Myers Hamer and Walker Brumble both won Scholarships.
Myers Hamer won a $1,000 scholarship that was presented by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources with funds from the Harry Hampton Wildlife Fund. Myers was shooting in the Senior Advanced division of the SCYSF sporting clays program.
Walker Brumble won a $500 scholarship as an award for being elected to the 2016 SCYSF All-State Men’s Shooting Team.
Walker was shooting in the Senior Varsity 1st year division. To be eligible for the All-State Team shooters must be in the 11th grade.
The members were chosen by their performance in both shooting events and scholastic performance.
Scores from three of the four SCYSF events and school grades were both used in determining the team.
The shooters with the highest combined totals were chosen to make up the 3-person All State Team.
Walker had the highest combined total of all contestants and for that accomplishment was awarded Captain of the All-State Team.
The Dillon County 4-H team had 4 squads of three team members each shooting in different divisions at the SCYSF State Championship.
In the Sr. Advanced division, Myers Hamer, Matthew Mason, and Cole Gasque formed a squad. Mason who is a Jr. division shooter and Gasque who is an intermediate division shooter were moved up to complete the squad and shot on the Sr. course.
On the difficult Sr. course, Hamer and Gasque both scored 80 and Mason shot 51
Walker Brumble, Mason Powers, and Gately Bethea formed a squad to shoot in the Sr. 1st Year Division.
Powers a Jr. division shooter and Bethea, an intermediate division shooter were both moved up to the Sr. 1st year division.
They also shot on the difficult Sr. course with Brumble breaking 83 targets, powers broke 75 and Bethea broke 63.
Jackson Elrod, Zack Arrington, and Justin Herring all intermediate advanced shooters competed as a squad. On the Intermediate course Elrod broke 91 out of 100 targets, Arrington broke 85 and Herring broke 74.
Intermediate 1st year shooters Jacob Edwards, Brenna Miller, and David Ryan Camp shot as a squad in the Intermediate 1st year division on the intermediate course. Edwards broke 85, Miller broke 66 and Camp broke 60.
Other Dillon County shooters, Tangie McFee and Rich McFee competed with Mid-Carolina 4-H.
Tangie shot on an all Ladies team on the difficult Sr. Course and broke 84 targets Rich McFee shot on an Intermediate Advanced squad for Mid Carolina on the Intermediate course and shot an individual score of 92.
His squad tied for 3rd place with a squad from Black River team. Rich was elected to shoot for his squad in the tie breaker and captured third place for his team. .
Senior team members of the Dillon County 4-H shooting team, Myers Hamer and Cole Anders both won $1,000 scholarships at the SCDNR state sporting clay tournament which was held at the Palmetto Shooting complex in Edgefield, SC.
Both shooters are the only seniors on the Dillon County 4-H shooting sports team this year.
Dillon County 4-H would like to recognize South Carolina Friends of the NRA for a grant that provided 20 cases of shotgun shells and a pallet of clay targets for practice.
Dillon County will host a Friends of NRA banquet on August 4, at Shuler’s Bar-B-Q and hope the community will come out to help raise funds to support youth shooting programs.
