The Dillon Wildcats exploded in the second quarter with three touchdowns to pull away from the Marlboro County Bulldogs with a 58-27 non-conference win at Bennettsville’s McAlpine Stadium Friday night.
The teams exchanged the lead three times in the first seven minutes before the Bulldogs tied the game 14-14 with 1:57 left in the first quarter.
Nemo Squire put the Cats in front for good with back to back touchdown runs of 3 and 6 yards and a pair of 2-point conversions on his way to his fifth 100-plus rushing game of the season. Jack Grider connected with Ahmari Huggins-Bruce on a 15-yard scoring toss and Squire ran a two-point conversion to give the Cats a 38-14 lead at halftime.
The Bulldogs scored first in the second half on a 22-yard run by JaCardo Riggins on the sixth play of their opening drive, but kicker Dylan Clark’s kick was blocked by Quincy McCollum. That led to three more consecutive scores by the Wildcats to build their lead to 58-20 before the Dogs scored their fourth touchdown of the game with only 3 seconds remaining on the clock.
In addition to Squire’s 131 of the team’s 238 yards rushing, Jack Grider completed eight of his eleven pass attempts for 227 yards and three touchdowns. Lucas Hunter relieved Grider in the fourth quarter and completed his only pass for 14 yards for a TD as the Cats finished with a net total of 479 yards in offense. Squire scored four times on 2-pt conversion attempts.
Darius Grant led the Bulldog offense at quarterback with 57 yards rushing and completed 7 of 10 passes for another 90 yards. JaCardo Riggins led the rushing with 106 yards on three long runs and Damarcus Hicks tallied 84 yards on 18 rushing attempts.
The Dogs netted 253 yards on the ground and 90 yards through the air for 343 in total offense.
Dillon will be at home this weekend to take on the Hanahan Hawks in the first round of the AAA playoffs.
