One of the highlights of the Glove and Trowel Garden Club each year is our Christmas Social and Dinner Party with our husbands or a guest. This event was held at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, December 6, 2016 at the St. Barnabas Episcopal Parish House in Dillon with 18 members plus guests in attendance.
Dawn Arnette and Ellen Jordan were our Chairmen this year. Committee members were: Rosemary Bethea, Kathryn Bumgardner, Lydia Carr, Linda Dutton, Sally Harrison, Miriam Hayes, Elizabeth Jordan, Julia McLaurin, Fay Sloan, and Marilyn Zunk.
The décor was white and silver. Six dining tables were beautifully decorated with white table cloths, arrangements of silver and white (each was different). This gave our members ideas to use in their own homes. NGC Objective: Floral Design.
The meeting was called to order by Dawn Arnette in the absence of our president, Julie Sawyer.
She welcomed members and guests. Celebrating December birthdays are Amy McCall (Dec. 28) and Debbie Rogers (Dec. 29).
After club business was completed, she called on the Reverend Dr. John O. Bumgardner, Jr., husband of our member, Kathryn Bumgardner, to ask our blessing. Each member prepared a special food item for our covered dish dinner which provided a wonder meal for us to enjoy. We also take a wrapped gift for ourselves and one for our husband or guest for our “Chinese Gift Exchange.”
We all look forward to having Owen Wallace, husband of member Natalie Wallace, lead us in our “Chinese Gift Exchange.” Owen, decked out this year with his blinking Christmas tree lights necklace from Disney World, always delights us in encouraging people to take someone else’s gift. This makes it more interesting!
Each year we purchase Christmas gifts for needy and special needs children and teens. Each member is given a name and brings a gift wrapped and tagged with the child or teen’s name.
Silver Christmas tree ornaments were given as favors.
Our next meeting will be held on January 11, 2017 with Julia McLaurin as Hostess and Lydia Carr, Program Chairman. Our guest speaker will be Major Hulon, Dillon County Sheriff.
