Dillon’s Monazia Sowells pitched the entire 7 innings and picked up a 7-6 win over the visiting Johnsonville Lady Flashes in varsity softball played in Dillon on Tuesday, April 23.
Johnsonville’s #12 had a lead-off single in the first inning but Sowells’ pitching and the Lady Wildcats’ defense did not allow a run.
Dillon’s Abby Bristow singled and stole a base in the bottom of the first inning but Dillon was unable to place a run across home plate.
Jada Cox had a lead-off walk in the top of the second inning. Once again, the Flashes did not score.
Dillon did not muster any offense in the bottom of the second inning as the side was retired in 1-2-3 fashion.
A good running-catch by Dillon’s Jayla Goodwin in right field helped to retire Johnsonville in the top of the third inning.
Two errors by Johnsonville in the bottom of the third inning allowed the first score of the game. A single by Nyeisha Wilson and a double by Qyeisha Wilson placed 2 more runs on the scoreboard for Dillon. After 3 innings of play, Dillon was up 3-0.
The Flashes’ Kirby lined one to left and ended up on second. The first baseman, #16, garnered a walk. #7 hit a grounder to third, and the runner scored on an error. After 3 1/2 innings of play Dillon was up 3-1.
Dillon was once again retired in 1-2-3 fashion in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Dillon’s Jenascia Lester at third made a good catch on a fly ball in foul territory to retire the Flashes’ #9. Abby Bristow made a good catch on a hot grounder to retire Thompson.
Jada Cox opened the bottom of the fifth inning as pitcher for Johnsonville. Monazia Sowells arrived at first on a dropped fly ball to right. Abby Bristow arrived at first on an error at first. Nyeisha Wilson hit a sacrifice to score a run. After 5 innings of play Dillon was up 5-1.
Johnsonville’s Olivia Howell hit a hot grounder by third for a single. Johnsonville’s #8 hit a hot one to Abby Bristow, and the runner was out at second on a fielder’s choice. The side was retired before any score.
Dillon’s Logan Grice hit a grounder by third for a 2-out single. Lexie Rogers hit one to left to pick up a rbi. Jenascia Lester hit one to third and ended up on second. A run scored. After 6 innings of play, Dillon was up 6-1.
Johnsonville’s Megan Dennis hit a grounder to third that was bobbled and a bad throw to first enabled Dennis to end up at second. Emily Eaddy bunted safely. A run scored and cut Dillon’s lead to 6-2. Johnsonville’s #12 hit one up the middle for a single and a rbi. The Flashes’ #13 garnered a walk. Johnsonville’s #16 hit one down the third base line for a double and 2 rbi to tie the game at 6 after 6 1/2 innings.
Dillon’s senior, Skyler McCoy, garnered a walk. A courtesy runner entered the game for McCoy. Jayla Goodwin hit one by third and picked up the winning run.
Dillon will host Wade Hampton today, (Thursday, April 25) at 6:00 p.m.
